Manners and Precautions in Korea

Hello! Many travelers planning a trip to Korea often mention that they were surprised because manners differ from those in Japan.
To avoid troubles and enjoy a pleasant experience with locals, it’s important to know at least the basic etiquette.
Here, we will introduce some key points to keep in mind for a smooth and enjoyable trip to Korea.

1. Keep Quiet on Subways and Buses

In Korea, many people value proper etiquette on public transportation. On the subway, talking on the phone or watching videos with the speaker on is considered bad manners. Speaking loudly in a quiet carriage can draw attention from other passengers.
When listening to music, use earphones and be mindful of sound leakage to avoid disturbing others.

Important Manners and Precautions

Also, priority seats (for the elderly, pregnant women, or people with disabilities) are reserved for those in need. Even if they are empty, it is generally considered inappropriate for young people to sit there. As in Japan, showing consideration for others is important.

② Dining Culture Differences

In Korea, unlike in Japan, eating out alone is not yet fully common.
Especially for dishes meant to be shared, such as stews or samgyeopsal, many restaurants do not offer single servings.
If you are dining alone, it is better to choose simpler dishes like kimbap, naengmyeon, or tteokbokki.

Also, many restaurants provide water, kimchi, and chopsticks as self-service, so it is common to take them yourself without staff guidance.
If water is not provided, check whether there is a water dispenser inside the restaurant.

③ Tipping is generally unnecessary, but there are exceptions

Korea is known as a country without a tipping culture. In restaurants, taxis, hair salons, and similar services, tips are usually not required. The prices displayed already include all charges, so no additional payment is needed.

However, at luxury hotels or guided tours with English-speaking guides, giving a small tip can be a way to show appreciation for attentive service.

④ Ask before taking photos

As a tourist, you may want to take photos, but not all places allow free photography.
Especially in markets or small private shops, taking pictures of products or interiors may be discouraged. It is polite to ask, “May I take a photo?” before shooting.

Also, when photographing people, always get their permission first. Unauthorized photos or posting on social media can cause trouble.

⑤ Street smoking is prohibited in some areas

Smoking regulations in Korea have become stricter each year.
In busy streets and tourist areas in Seoul, many places prohibit street smoking, and violations can result in fines. Use designated smoking areas if you wish to smoke.
There are also cafes or bars where smoking is allowed, so it’s a good idea to check in advance.

⑥ Make a good impression with simple Korean

While some shops understand English or Japanese, it’s not universal.
Especially in local or rural areas, even a little Korean goes a long way and is appreciated by locals.
Even if your pronunciation isn’t perfect, memorizing a few simple phrases can leave a positive impression.

Here are some recommended phrases:

アンニョンハセヨ (Annyeonghaseyo) – Hello
カムサハムニダ (Kamsahamnida) – Thank you
ケンチャナヨ (Gwenchanayo) – It’s okay / No problem
イゴ オルマエヨ? (Igeo eolmaeyo?) – How much is this?
ファジャンシル オディエヨ? (Hwajangsil eodieyo?) – Where is the restroom?

Even just greeting with a smile can change the way locals respond, so be sure to try using these!

Finally,

Korea is a popular overseas travel destination that is close to Japan and easy to enjoy, but not knowing the cultural differences can sometimes lead to unexpected situations.
By keeping in mind the manners and precautions introduced here, you can leave a good impression on locals and enjoy your trip pleasantly.

Remember, manners are not “rules” but “consideration.”
A little thoughtfulness can turn into wonderful memories of your trip.
Wishing you a joyful journey in Korea!
